Design of the Future

Design of the Future brief was to identify a future problem and resolve this through advanced design and emerging technology.

In my future design scenario, 100years into a dystopian future where natural disasters have significantly worsened leading to unpredictable and chaotic effects. This has led to humans designing a glove that allows, at first to adapt to the weather by changing their skin colour, which unsurprisingly is only available for the rich. This leads to uprising as the poor without any help continue to die. The poor develop a device through genetic recombination with other mammals creating a new species of humans who are adapted to each type of natural disasters.

The Story:

1.it is the year 2065. Humans overusing Earth’s resource has led to dire consequences. Earth’s climate has become so polluted that freak weather and tectonic plate movement has become a common occurrence. Hurricanes, tornados tsunami, volcanoes, wild fires, earthquakes are frequent as rain in the UK.

Knowing that the most stable continent in the new world is Africa, the rich led a mass invasion into Africa resulting in the ejection of African nationals. The weather in Africa fluctuates between tolerable heat waves and blizzards, while the rest of the world deals with extreme forms of natural disasters.

The current world population has plummeted to 3 billion people because of this.

4.The rich learned that freak weather conditions was giving rise to babies with spina bifida and anecephaly.

A light skinned person being exposed to 1 hour of intense sunlight will lead to reduction in folate levels, causing this problem in new born babies. They learnt that dark skin blocks this effect and so having dark skin during heat waves was highly desired while light skin in blizzards was desired to minimise any loss of vitamin D, preventing rickets/bone weakening.

The rich pursued the development of a device, which allowed their skin colour to change with click of button. This revolutionary idea led to the arrival of Gauntlet Glove, a device that allows the user to change their skin colour to adapt to changes in weather conditions unsurprisingly, this device was only available for the rich.

5.Anna Mi is half Thai and half English medical engineer, working for Gauntlet Corporation in Johannesburg. Her parents separated when she was young before the new world order, her mother relocated Anna and herself to the Africa after establishment of the new world order. While her half brother and father live in Malaysia, where she stays in contact via instant mail.

Anna has quickly risen through the ranks at Gauntlet Corporation with her combined experience in medical and engineering, which has allowed her to work on the development of version 2.0 of Gauntlet Gloves.

Anna overhears her lead developer and chairmen talk about the plans for Gauntlet Glove 2.0. “We will use the animal adaptation feature to wipe out all the rebels and the poor. We will then recreate Earth to our vision”.

8. A distraught Anna spends the next couple of days crying about the thought of the poor being wiped away, constantly picturing her brother and father being killed. With great courage, She wipes away the tears and is determined to prevent this happening.

Anna hatches a plan on how to steal Gauntlet Gloves 2.0 and how to smuggle it into Malaysia to her brother and father.

During the next day at Gauntlet corporation, Anna enters the Version 2.0 room and sets off the fire alarm. In the evacuation process, Anna steals 4 Gauntlet Glove 2.0’s and evacuates with the rest of the employee’s, where she has her car waiting for her near the evacuation spot. In the confusion of the fire alarm, she disappears to her car driving to Maputo pier (near Swaziland onwards to Malaysia).

When the staffs return, they notice 4 Gauntlet Gloves 2.0’s have gone missing. Analysis of CCTV recordings shows Anna stealing the device and leaving the premises. This leads the chairmen to activate their sleeper agents. The agents are trained hitmen who will lead the campaign to remove the poor, where they locate that Anna’s heading for Maputo pier.

Anna is safely inside the submarine that she hired, where it’s slowly starting to submerge, when she hears bullets firing. She knows she cut it close, as they can no longer catch up to her till Malasyia.

In Malaysia, Anna is over the moon to finally see her brother and father after such a long time and informs them of the horror of Gauntlet Corporation. Anna delivers the device and blueprints to the countries rebels thanks to her brother, where she helps them develop the animal feature. She acquires koi fish DNA and combines it with the glove, giving the user scales and gills, perfectly adapted to surviving near water and its destructive power. She encourages the rebels to make more and supply the people, which they agree too.

She leaves for Europe and Greece, saying her goodbyes to her family knowing she’s doing this for the good of human kind.

Anna continues her mercenary work, delivering another Gauntlet Glove to the rebels of Greece, this time combining Galapagos iguana’s scale and claws with the device, giving the user the ability to survive in Europe’s hot/volcanic climates. Again she ensures the rebel’s distribute gloves to the poor.

Anna leaves for America and the Caribbeans, while being oblivious to the fact that Gauntlet agents are hot on her trail.

In America and the Caribbean where the hurricanes and tornadoes are common, she meets the countries rebels. This time, Anna combines naked mole rat DNA with the gloves, giving rise to users who can dig themsleves undeground and protect themslves from the weather above like hurricnaes and tornadaos. With another species of humans developed and adapted, she leaves for China and Nepal.

Finally in China and Nepal, Anna hands over the final Gauntlet glove combined with eagle DNA to the countries rebels. This will give rise to users developing wings, allowing them to fly into the skies away from earthquakes and sinkholes.

Suddenly there was loud “Bang!”, as Anna drops to the floor, revealing a Gauntelet agent a with gun. Anna’s death causes the Chinese and Nepalese to attack and kill the Gauntelet agent. The rebels of the world unite and plot against the rich, possibly setting off World War 3.
